The 56th Gold Coast Sports Awards on 1 March 2025 is a fitting start to the City of Gold Coast sporting year.
This event engenders pride and encourages the Gold Coast community to support sport at all levels through a stylish celebration of the sporting achievements in 2024. The Awards recognize not only our city’s elite athletes but also its emerging stars , our volunteers, sporting events and other threads in sport.
The importance of this year ‘s Awards is reflected in the fact that the State Minister for Sport and Racing, Tim Manders will be attending.
2025 will be a pivotal year for sport with the Gold Coast and the rest of Queensland awaiting the State Government’s announcement next month of its plans for the infrastructure required for the 2032 Olympic and Paralympic games.
Sports Gold Coast in February last year has already made a presentation to Council to encourage it to lobby State Government with support of the Gold Coast business community for the redevelopment of the Gold Coast Aquatic Centre. The proposed development would include a retractable roof and floor and permanent grandstand 18,000 seats. This would facilitate multipurpose events, e.g. basketball, tennis and live entertainment.
This option delivers a cheaper and more efficient use of public money than the planned temporary facility currently proposed at a new entertainment centre at Roma Street. It is also a better option for our city in the construction of a boutique stadium for entertainment and sports events proposed at Marine Parade Southport.
Sports Gold Coast through exclusive boardroom meetings and forums this year will continue to press for this important infrastructure to be considered along with other sporting infrastructure sites such as the Southport Sharks development at their precinct, adjacent to Griffith University light rail, and the Gold Coast Private and Public hospitals.
2025 will see the continuation of Sports Gold Coast drive with the Gold Coast Sporting Hall of Fame in developing a membership model that will generate funds to support the redevelopment and relocation of the Hall to a special facility at the Carrara Sports Precinct. A concept plan has already been prepared which will be unveiled next month.
