The Gold Coast Cougars Little League Baseball Team have added another piece of impressive silverware to their already stacked trophy cabinet, taking home the title of the People’s Choice Gold Coast Team of the Year at the 2019 Gold Coast Sports Star Awards.

This award, proudly sponsored by 102.9 Hot Tomato and MyGC, was voted by the Gold Coast community, with the Australian representative team beating out three other extremely worthy finalists to earn bragging rights for the next year.

This young side of up-and-coming baseball superstars provided one of the great narratives for Gold Coast sport in 2018.

Not only did the team make history as the first Gold Coast side to claim the Australian Little League Championship, but in doing so they also booked their place at the World Little League Titles in America, representing Australia.

The squad was recently named Queensland Junior Team of the Year at the Queensland Sport Awards for their massive achievements in 2018. 

“Our journey just keeps going and going after our success last year, but maybe this is one of our greatest achievements in front of our home crowd.”

The Little League Championships in America were watched by over 30 million people, with the eyes of the world on our local Gold Coast team.

Of course, they did us proud, representing the typical ‘have-a-go’ Gold Coast spirit, even when their Coach was suspended from the dugout and had to watch from the stands.

In accepting the People’s Choice Award, the team received the most raucous cheers of the night from the 500 strong crowd filled with corporates, grassroots teams, professional athletes and Gold Coast stars.
