It’s fantastic to see further investment in Australian Para sport, with the Federal Government announcing $427,000 in funding to support 144 Paralympians and emerging Para athletes across 22 sports.
Delivered through the Australian Institute of Sport’s Para Athlete Barrier Fund, the funding will help athletes manage some of the costs associated with competing at an elite level, including travel, specialised equipment, technology and additional support needs.
With grants of up to $4,000 available, this year’s announcement builds on the $361,000 awarded to 122 athletes in 2025.
While we often celebrate the medals, personal bests and incredible performances of our athletes, what we don’t always see is the enormous financial pressure that comes with competing in Olympic and Paralympic sports.
For many athletes and their families, the cost of representing their state or country on a national or international stage is significant. Between flights, accommodation, competition fees, coaching, equipment and time away from work, the expenses can quickly add up, often with very little financial assistance available.
And sometimes, the sacrifices go far beyond what most of us would ever imagine.
We’ve heard stories of athletes finding themselves without stable housing because they’ve put everything they have into continuing their sporting careers. We’ve heard of athletes struggling to afford enough food to properly fuel their bodies while training and competing at an elite level.
It’s incredibly confronting to think that athletes who are working tirelessly for the opportunity to represent Australia can find themselves having to choose between basic everyday necessities and pursuing their sporting dreams.
And behind so many of these athletes are families making their own sacrifices, taking on additional work, using their savings and doing whatever they can to give their children the opportunity to succeed.
It’s something that sits very close to home for us at Sports Gold Coast, and exactly why our Grow for Gold program exists.
Through Grow for Gold, we provide selected emerging Gold Coast athletes with $10,000 in annual funding, helping relieve some of that financial pressure so they can focus on training, competing and continuing to develop in their chosen sport.
We’re incredibly proud to have Para triathlete Ashley Bryden and wheelchair basketballer Maddie Kelton among our athletes, alongside an outstanding group of young people working towards their own Olympic and Paralympic ambitions.
Getting to know our athletes and their families, hearing their stories and understanding what it actually takes to compete at this level has only reinforced how important financial support really is.
For some, that support might mean being able to travel to an international competition. For others, it could mean accessing equipment, paying for coaching or simply taking some of the pressure off their family.
As we look towards Brisbane 2032, there’s understandably so much excitement about the prospect of watching Australian athletes compete on home soil. But what we need to remember is that those athletes are making enormous sacrifices right now, long before they ever get the opportunity to stand on an Olympic or Paralympic stage.
If we want to see Australians succeeding in 2032, we need to be investing in them today.
It’s encouraging to see the Federal Government recognising these challenges and continuing to invest in Para sport. Through Grow for Gold, we’re proud to be playing our own part in supporting the next generation of athletes right here on the Gold Coast.
Because no athlete should have to choose between putting food on the table, having a roof over their head and pursuing the opportunity to represent their country.
