From finishing at the bottom of the ladder to securing a place in the 2026 AFLW Finals Series, the Gold Coast SUNS have delivered an extraordinary turnaround, marking an exciting new chapter for women’s football on the Gold Coast.

Just 12 months after a challenging season that saw the SUNS finish at the foot of the AFLW ladder, the club has transformed its fortunes, emerging as a competitive force and earning a place among the competition’s top eight teams.

The remarkable rise is a testament to the resilience, determination and belief within the playing group, coaching staff and wider club, demonstrating just how much can be achieved in a single season.

Under the leadership of senior coach Rhyce Shaw, the SUNS have embraced a fresh approach, combining exciting emerging talent with experienced players to build a competitive and united team.

Their success marks the club’s third AFLW finals appearance, following previous campaigns in 2020 and 2023, and represents a significant step forward in the development of the women’s football program.

As women’s sport continues to grow across the region, the achievements of professional teams like the SUNS play an important role in strengthening grassroots participation, developing local talent and showcasing the Gold Coast as a leading sporting city.

Sports Gold Coast congratulates the entire Gold Coast SUNS AFLW playing group, coaching staff and wider club on an outstanding achievement.

We look forward to cheering them on as they continue their remarkable journey through the 2026 AFLW Finals Series.
