It’s a huge month for the Southport Sharks. Not only have both QAFLW and QAFLW Development teams taken out their premierships, but now the VFL Sharks have booked their place in the Smithy’s VFL Grand Final — making this the third senior grand final appearance for the club in 2025.

The Sharks stormed into their third VFL Grand Final in four years with a commanding 21.17 (143) to 8.7 (55) victory over Frankston at Fankhauser Reserve.

After a tight opening few minutes, Southport exploded, kicking 15 goals to three between the 10-minute mark of the first quarter and three-quarter time, shutting down the contest early and delighting the home crowd.

Key forward Hugh Dixon was unstoppable, booting eight goals, taking 10 marks (six contested) and reaching the 50-goal milestone for the season. Four of his goals came in a blistering first quarter that set the tone for the day.

Max Pescud continued his red-hot form with three goals, while Josh Gore had nine scoring shots and finished with two majors.

The Sharks’ midfield dominance gave their forwards endless supply. Co-captain Jacob Dawson led from the front with 38 disposals, 11 score involvements and 10 clearances in a best-on-ground performance.

Jackson Edwards was everywhere, collecting 28 touches, booting two goals, and leading the game in intercepts with 12. Zac Foot (29 disposals) and Boyd Woodcock (27 disposals) were also prolific as the Sharks controlled the contest from start to finish.

This latest result caps off a remarkable month for Southport. Both the QAFLW Seniors and QAFLW Development sides claimed their premierships earlier this September, bringing two cups back to the Sharks’ trophy cabinet.

Now, the men’s VFL squad has the chance to deliver the perfect finish — a premiership hat-trick across the club’s senior programs.

The Big Dance Awaits

Southport will now prepare for the Smithy’s VFL Grand Final on Sunday, 21 September, as they look to finally claim that elusive first VFL premiership.

Sports Gold Coast congratulates the entire Sharks organisation on what has already been a history-making year and will be proudly cheering them on as they chase a clean sweep of senior premierships in 2025.
