Sharks continue VFL surge with Easter victory over Suns

Gold Coast footy fans were treated to an Easter Saturday showdown as the Southport Sharks and Gold Coast Suns battled it out at Fankhauser Reserve in the annual Mackenzie Cup clash. With local pride and tradition on the line, the Sharks rose to the occasion, powering home in the final term to claim a commanding 55-point victory – Southport 16.15 (111) def. Gold Coast 8.6 (54).

While the final scoreline suggests a blowout, the first three quarters were anything but. The Suns, bursting with youthful energy and AFL-listed firepower, matched Southport’s intensity and stayed within striking distance. But when it mattered most, the Sharks showcased their maturity and depth, slamming home six unanswered goals to put the game beyond reach.

The result sees Southport retain the Mackenzie Cup, extend their perfect record to 4–0, and sit clear at the top of the VFL ladder—a strong early statement in their 2025 campaign.
