From Grassroots to Gold Medals

This week’s From Grassroots to Gold Medals boardroom lunch brought together industry leaders, academics, and city stakeholders for a high-level conversation on the economic and cultural potential of esports — and what it could mean for the Gold Coast in the years leading up to the 2032 Olympic Games.

Held at Rydges Gold Coast Airport, the event was headlined by Southern Cross University’s Dr Dylan Poulus, a leading researcher in the esports space. Dr Poulus shared compelling insights on how esports is not only redefining how young people engage with sport, but also how it is becoming an increasingly influential part of the global sports ecosystem.

For businesses, local government, and the sporting sector, esports represents a unique opportunity:

  • Economic growth through new markets and events
  • Cultural engagement with a digital-native generation
  • Commercial partnerships across tech, tourism, and sport
  • Potential Olympic inclusion and international recognition

As the Gold Coast continues to position itself as a forward-thinking city and major events destination, esports is emerging as a space where innovation, investment, and impact intersect. The lunch facilitated valuable discussion around how to strategically support and grow this sector — from grassroots participation through to elite competition.

The overarching message was clear: the future of sport is evolving, and those who lean in early will be the ones to shape what comes next.

We extend our thanks to Dr Poulus and Southern Cross University for their leadership in this space, and to all attendees for contributing to such a meaningful dialogue. This is just the beginning of what’s possible when we combine traditional sports expertise with digital innovation.
