Our city’s greatest para-sport stars will take centre stage at the Gold Coast Sports Star Awards next week, with a stellar group of finalists in the hunt for Para-Sports Star of the Year.
The recipient of the prestigious award will come from an outstanding field of five locally-based athletes from different sports and disciplines, and be announced at next Thursday’s Sports Awards at Southport Sharks.
The field is highlighted by a three-time winner of the top para-sport gong, with para-canoe World Champion Curtis McGrath shooting for his fourth consecutive win in the category.
He faces stiff competition in the form of last year’s nominee and vision-impaired lawn bowls hero Jake Fehlberg, as well as Special Olympics Australian athletics champion Jasmine Williams, INAS Global Games Heptathlon victor Ebonie Cooper, and Para-Swimming sensation Madeleine McTernan.
The Para-Sports Star of the Year Award will celebrate the outstanding achievements of not only these finalists but of all para-sport on the Coast, an area that we need to continue to grow and support according to Sports Gold Coast Chair Geoff Smith.
“This award is about acknowledging the incredible achievements of our city’s most talented para-athletes, and their contribution to not only our city’s sporting achievements but the way they inspire others everyday,” he said.
“When you look at the achievements of these finalists, its incredible what they’ve achieved on the world stage, and particularly exciting in a Para-Olympics Year.
“As a city we can be extremely proud to have these athletes representing us and the spirit they display, now let’s get behind them.”
The Para-Sport Award will be just one of the major awards at the annual gala event, with Sports Gold Coast placing a strong focus on elite, grassroots and volunteering achievements over the last year.
