The City’s 52nd Annual Sports Awards were launched in front of a packed house of athletes, politicians and corporates on Wednesday Evening at McLaughlin’s Lawyers in Bundall.
The Launch brought together the Gold Coast’s premier athletes and teams (Titans & Suns) as well as a strong grassroots contingent, and local personalities led by Mayor Tom Tate.
In what was a rare opportunity for the city’s sporting and professional communities to come together, the Mayor officially launched the Awards in front of the stunning backdrop of the Surfers Paradise Skyline.
“The thing that separates Gold Coast sport from other cities is how much our teams and athletes embrace our community – today’s launch and February’s Sports Awards are our chance to embrace you,” said Mr Tate.
“As Mayor and as a lover of sport, what a privilege it is to be here with all of you to launch this fantastic initiative – well done Sports Gold Coast.”
The launch also marked the start of announcements for the list of prestigious awards, with the race well and truly on to take the mantle from the likes of Steph Gilmore, Sally Pearson, Michael Shelley and Curtis McGrath who have won in recent years.
GC Sports Hall of Fame President Daphne Pirie AO MBE announced the first three finalists for the major gong of Gold Coast Sports Star of the Year, and if the initial nominees are anything to go by, it promises to be another stellar field.
Aron Sherriff (Lawn Bowls), Georgia Miller (Iron Woman), and Mathew Belcher (Sailing) were rewarded for their amazing sporting achievements throughout the year as the first finalists for the Award, with further announcements to be made in the coming weeks.
The 52nd Annual Gold Coast Sports Star Awards will be held on the 27th February, 2020 at Southport Sharks.
The Awards focus on the inclusion of all areas of our sporting community from the grassroots to elite, with awards across numerous categories from People’s Choice, to Community Volunteers, to Para-Sport.
Stay tuned for more exciting finalists announcements as we draw closer to the big night.
