ABOUT SPORTS STAR AWARDS
The goal of the awards is to recognise and promote the outstanding sports achievements and sport personalities in our magnificent city.
In 1968, a small group of business and sports leaders founded the Gold Coast Branch of the Sportsmen’s Association of Australia (Queensland). The branch named a Gold Coast sportsperson to become a finalist in the Queensland sportsman of the year for the Walter Lindrum Award (known as the Lindy Awards).
When the Gold Coast Sporting Hall of Fame was established in 1999, the Gold Coast Sportsman’s Association, before disbanding, resolved unanimously to pass their honour board, finances and the authorisation for staging the sportsman of the year award to the committee of the Gold Coast Sporting Hall of Fame, ensuring the continuity of the award.
The Hall of Fame has honoured the vision of the original Gold Coast Sportsman’s Assoc and continued the annual award, now renamed the Gold Coast Sport Star of the Year.
The award has continued to be a strongly supported as a city of Gold Coast award and its mainstay remains the Peter Lacy Trophy. The late Peter Lacy was not only a surf lifesaving icon in the city, but also a well-known, respected businessman.
The Gold Coast Sporting Hall of Fame plays a very important role in preserving the great history of Gold Coast sport and ensuring the legacy created by our past sports stars and business leaders is continued.
In 2016, Sports Gold Coast decided to support the Hall of Fame by underwriting a special Sports Star Awards night, lifting its profile with a gala event to properly honour the city’s sporting achievements and engender pride in our city.
Through our members and sponsors, Sports Gold Coast, have supported the awards by purchasing tables or sponsoring the event, which has grown from 310 attendees to 575. In 2022 we’re expecting 700.

The awards also acknowledge the contribution of major sporting events which contribute to the promotion of our city, such as the Commonwealth Games, Gold Coast Marathon, V8 Supercars, etc.
