PROJECTS
Gold Coast United FC
Sports Gold Coast’s first success story! As Sports Gold Coast was being formed in 2016 one of the first areas of concern identified was to create a whole-of-city soccer club that would not only be a pathway for players through to the elite level of the game, but would also be a major step in the city regaining an A-League licence.
Sports Gold Coast created new entity, Gold Coast United FC, and then successfully sought admission into the Queensland National Premier League men’s and women’s competitions. The club became official in 2017 and began playing in the 2018 competitions.
GC United FC now offer a successful blueprint in so many areas for existing and prospective clubs. Gold Coast United FC is a living, breathing example of why Sports Gold Coast was created.
Annual Gold Coast Sports Awards
Since 1968 the Gold Coast has annually named its Sports Star of the Year. This is a prestigious award, which almost always is claimed by a current world champion. Soon after it was formed, Sports Gold Coast announced that it would be partnering with the custodians of the Sports Awards the Gold Coast Sporting Hall of Fame to stage the awards. Sports Gold Coast was able to bring vital sponsorship dollars and organisational expertise to this event.
The initial awards under this partnership were held in March, 2017 a glittering black-tie event that attracted 300 people. The following year, in February 2018, almost 600 people attended the gala awards night.
Gold Coast Rugby Union
Through 2016 and 2017 Sports Gold Coast invested $70,000 in Bond University’s campaign in the Aon Uni 7s campaign. That investment came partly through Bond’s significant involvement in the creation of Sports Gold Coast, but was also part of Sports Gold Coast’s long term plan to assist in the development of all facets of rugby on the Gold Coast. These include:
- Assisting in the creation of a financially viable model to drive the grassroots of the sport;
- Increasing the profile of the clubs representative arm the Gold Coast Cyclones;
- Assisting the development of all levels of women’s rugby on the Gold Coast with the eventual aim of the Gold Coast being the home of Australian Women’s 7s.
Cricket: Big Bash League
Sports Gold Coast continues to play a role in the city hosting BBL Twenty20 cricket games at Metricon Stadium, which could happen in the 2018/19 season. The eventual aim is for the Gold Coast to secure its own BBL licence.
eSports
Sports Gold Coast has embraced the eSports phenomenon and is positioning the Gold Coast to be a major player. Across the globe, purpose-built stadiums are attracting thousands of spectators to watch professional gamers do battle. Sports Gold Coast is part of preliminary discussions to build an eSports stadium on the Gold Coast.
