Sports Gold Coast (SGC) has hit the ground running at the start of the new decade with the launch of an extremely exciting and vital initiative for the city – the SGC Women in Sport (WinS) Project.
To mark the momentous opening of the project, a stellar group of Coast business women from different industries and passions came together at the home of the Gold Coast Suns to share their support for a greater female sporting presence in the city.
The esteemed group comprised of the likes of Angie Bell (Federal Member for Moncrieff) & Trina Hockley (Director of Sports Gold Coast) with Suns AFLW team members Taylor Smith and Tori Groves-Little and the inaugural group of Gold Coast business women supporting this Project.
Trina, who has been on the SGC journey since the very beginning, herself a very successful business owner of L&M Gold Star and long-term Gold Coast resident, is leading the initiative.
“The Project seeks to galvanize Gold Coast women business leaders to get behind women’s Sport in the City and show Australia and the world how its power can change a community and make a significant difference,” Trina said.
“It’s time for Gold Coast businesswomen to step up and help unleash the power of Women’s Sport by either contributing $5,000 for a gold class Membership or $1,000 for a Silver.
“Together we can change the Sports image of the Gold Coast from one of a graveyard for national sporting teams to the capital of Women’s sport in Australia.”
This initiative by Sports Gold Coast coincides with the historic entry of the Suns AFL women’s team into the National premiership this year.
This will be the first Gold Coast national women’s team, with excitement mounting among the local community for their first home game at Metricon Stadium on Saturday 15th February.
The Suns and Sports Gold Coast share the same vision to see women’s sport flourish in the city, in the AFLW but also in all sports, and Suns Commercial Manager Simon Fitzgibbon said he is very excited to see how far it could go.
“The Suns are grateful for this much needed Sports Gold Coast initiative which I believe will bring about a significant and positive chain reaction in the development of Gold Coast women sport” Simon said.
“Business leader’s signing up to this Project will not be disappointed.. they will have a rare opportunity to be part of Gold Coast Sporting history.”
The Women in Sport Project is at this stage built around a two-tier membership scheme, in which the benefits include the sponsorship of a specific player in the Suns AFLW team, a signed playing jersey, VIP tickets to matches and the opportunity to be among this inaugural group.
Sports Gold Coast already has a strong record in supporting Gold Coast women’s Sport. In 2017 it assisted Bond University in the establishment of its national women’s sevens team through a similar Membership structure.
SGC has also aided in the creation of the women’s National Premier League football team, Gold Coast United, and assisted Bond in the establishment of a State Netball team.
Trina said that Plans are afoot to work towards a W-league football team and a women’s Big Bash licence further down the track with other target sports being in basketball and rugby league.
Trina added “that for a relatively small contribution, corporates can sign up as members of SGC with the satisfaction of knowing that they are contributing to a historic legacy and at the same time enjoying the benefits of networking opportunities with other likeminded and successful corporates at the Sun’s women games and other sporting and corporate events.
This will literally be a game changer for the Gold Coast and the start of a completely new and innovative chapter in its rich sporting history.”
