Local Stars Shining Bright as Finalists Announced for Coast’s Top Sporting Gong

Feb 3, 2020 | FINALISTS, SPORTS STAR AWARDS

World beaters, hall-of-famers and national champions headline the stacked list of finalists for this year’s Gold Coast Sports Star of the Year Award, announced at Southport Sharks this morning.

The recipient of the prestigious award will come from a stellar field of seven locally-based athletes, and be announced at the annual black-tie event on Thursday the 27th of February.

The seven esteemed finalists can be found below:

All seven finalists had outstanding years in their chosen sports, with Mat Belcher (Sailing), Toby Price (Motorsport) and Emma McKeon (Swimming) rewarded once again for their achievements, among the nominees for the second consecutive year.

Of the new finalist brigade, Georgia Miller (Surf Lifesaving) and Millie Boyle (Rugby) have been recognised for breakout years, while Aron Sherriff (Bowls) and Gretel Tippett (Netball) also had one of the best years of their stellar careers in 2019.

From this illustrious list, we were privileged to have Millie Boyle & Mat Belcher join us for the official announcement, each taking time out of their busy schedule to share their thoughts on how fantastic it is to be recognised by their local community.

Sports Gold Coast Chair Geoff Smith said this year’s finalists highlight the strength and diversity of the Coast’s sporting climate.

“To have this calibre of award nominees across such a large range of sports, it’s a remarkable achievement for the Gold Coast and something we need to celebrate,” Mr Smith said.

“When you look at the achievements of these finalists, it’s obvious that the city is a breeding ground for champions, and the important role we play in national success.”

The winner will join the likes of Sally Pearson, Shannon Eckstein and most recently Steph Gilmore as winners of previous years.

Reigning winner and surfing champion Steph Gilmore said how important it was to her to be recognised by her local community.

“Without the support that I’ve had from the Gold Coast community throughout my career I never could have achieved the success I have,” she said.

“It’s very humbling and such an honour to be recognised through this award and in the company of such amazing Gold Coast athletes.”

Now in its 52nd year, the Gold Coast Sports Star Awards focus on giving this support to our local heroes and celebrating the city’s sporting achievements.
