DAPHNE PIRIE MBE Ao

SPIRIT OF SPORT AWARD

HISTORY

The Daphne Pirie Spirit of Sport Medallion was established to honour the enduring legacy of champion hockey player Daphne Pirie, a trailblazer for female athletes in Australia. Initially a nationally ranked track and field athlete, Daphne’s entry into hockey was serendipitous; she was drawn to the sport while training with her sister in Brisbane’s Wooloowin.

Beyond her competitive success, Daphne was a passionate advocate for women’s sports and our community. After retiring from competitive play, she dedicated herself to volunteering and promoting sports at various levels, particularly through the Queensland Academy of Sport. She served as the founding president of Womensport Queensland and was the first female vice-president of the Queensland Olympic Council, working tirelessly to ensure women had a voice and opportunities in the sporting arena.

Daphne’s commitment to her community and the development of young athletes was unwavering. She inspired countless individuals through her involvement in local sports clubs, mentorship programs, and community events. Her spirit of inclusivity and support created a welcoming environment for aspiring athletes, encouraging them to pursue their passions and strive for excellence.

The Daphne Pirie Spirit of Sport Medallion celebrates individuals who embody her passion, commitment, and integrity. It recognises those who inspire others through their involvement in sports, making a lasting impact on their communities while upholding the values of respect, teamwork, and community spirit. Daphne Pirie’s legacy continues to inspire future generations of athletes and volunteers, ensuring that her spirit lives on in the sporting community.
